Spearheaded by a group of parents, local business owners and other determined volunteers, the Ronald McDonald House of Burlington first opened its doors in 1984 to offer a home away from home for families of hospitalized children.
The concept was simple – to provide a warm home, nourishment, respite and a listening ear to families when they need it the most.
Burlington’s First Congregational Church graciously provided their unoccupied parsonage to the founding committee, offering them a 20-year lease on the building for just $1.00 a year. This generous gift made it possible for families to begin staying in Burlington, at no charge, and less than a mile from their hospitalized child.
Through the generosity and planning of hundreds of volunteers, parents, and community members, the “House That Love Built” became a reality, opening its doors on February 14, 1984.
“Our House is built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child. We believe that when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of family is a powerful positive influence in their recovery.”
